A24’s 92% RT Dark Comedy With Sleeper Oscar Buzz For Lead Actress Sets Streaming Release Date
One of A24’s biggest critical hits from this past year, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, sets its streaming release date. Directed by Mary Bronstein, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You stars Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, Christian Slater, and A$AP Rocky, and currently has a 92% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to garnering Gotham Awards nominations and a Golden Globe acting nomination.
If I Had Legs I’d Kick You follows Linda (Byrne), a mother in crisis who must care for her sick child alone while her husband is away for work, while working herself and trying to get a gaping hole in her ceiling fixed (which has forced her and her daughter to stay at a motel). Linda is spiraling and venting everything to her therapist (O’Brien), but finds little help anywhere.
Warner Bros. Discovery has now confirmed that If I Had Legs I’d Kick You will be available to stream on HBO Max from January 30. Bronstein’s feature joins the platform with Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine (which will release on streaming a week earlier), alongside other A24 hits from 2025, such as Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby and Celine Song’s Materialists.
January 2026 will be a very busy month for HBO Max, as it will also be debuting The Pitt season 2 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Additionally, A24’s Marty Supreme hits theaters on Christmas Day, therefore, it will probably release on HBO sometime in early 2026. While Marty Supreme is A24’s biggest Oscars contender this year, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You has a stake in one category.
While Byrne has not been one of the seemingly guaranteed nominees for the Oscar for Best Lead Actress in 2026 since the beginning of the season, such as Jessie Buckley for Hamnet or Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value, she has steadily gained momentum for this recognition. Byrne has now been nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe for her performance.
This may be the only Oscar nomination If I Had Legs I’d Kick You would get, but it is appearing increasingly likely. Byrne’s co-star Conan O’Brien is also set to host the Oscars again this year. This would also be Byrne’s first-ever Oscar nomination in her extensive career, which has included titles such as Bridesmaids, Neighbors, Spy, X-Men: First Class, and Mrs. America.
Oscar nominations should be announced by the time that If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is released on streaming, so HBO Max subscribers will know if they are watching one of the selected five or one of the year’s biggest snubs by then. This intensely stressful movie has earned well-deserved acclaim, and soon, more audiences can check it out if they wish.
